    Urban Logistics in Amsterdam: A Modal Shift from Roadways to Waterway

    The efficiency of urban logistics is vital for economic prosperity and quality of life in cities. However, rapid urbanization poses significant challenges, such as congestion, emissions, and strained infrastructure. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing an optimal urban logistic network that integrates urban waterways and last-mile delivery in Amsterdam. The study highlights the untapped potential of inland waterways in addressing logistical challenges in the city center. The problem is formulated as a two-echelon location routing problem with time windows, and a hybrid solution approach is developed to solve it effectively. The proposed algorithm consistently outperforms existing approaches, demonstrating its effectiveness in solving existing benchmarks and newly developed instances. Through a comprehensive case study, the advantages of implementing a waterway-based distribution chain are assessed, revealing substantial cost savings (approximately 28%) and reductions in vehicle weight (about 43%) and travel distances (roughly 80%) within the city center. The incorporation of electric vehicles further contributes to environmental sustainability. Sensitivity analysis underscores the importance of managing transshipment location establishment costs as a key strategy for cost efficiencies and reducing reliance on delivery vehicles and road traffic congestion. This study provides valuable insights and practical guidance for managers seeking to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and promote sustainable transportation practices. Further analysis is warranted to fully evaluate the feasibility and potential benefits, considering infrastructural limitations and canal characteristics

    A systematic design approach for objectifying Building with Nature solutions

    Hydraulic engineering infrastructure is supposed to keep functioning for many years and is likely to interfere with both the natural and the social environment at various scales. Due to its long life-cycle, hydraulic infrastructure is bound to face changing environmental conditions as well as changes in societal views on acceptable solutions. This implies that sustainability and adaptability are/should be important attributes of the design, the development and operation of hydraulic engineering infrastructure. Sustainability and adaptability are central to the Building with Nature (BwN) approach. Although nature-based design philosophies, such as BwN, have found broad support, a key issue that inhibits a wider mainstream implementation is the lack of a method to objectify BwN concepts. With objectifying, we mean turning the implicit into an explicit engineerable ‘object’, on the one hand, and specifying clear design ‘objectives’, on the other. This paper proposes the “Frame of Reference” approach as a method to systematically transform BwN concepts into functionally specified engineering designs. It aids the rationalisation of BwN concepts and facilitates the transfer of crucial information between project development phases, which benefits the uptake, acceptance and eventually the successful realisation of BwN solutions. It includes an iterative approach that is well suited for assessing status changes of naturally dynamic living building blocks of BwN solutions. The applicability of the approach is shown for a case that has been realised in the Netherlands. Although the example is Dutch, the method, as such, is generically applicable

    Objectifying Building with Nature strategies: Towards scale-resolving policies

    By definition, Building with Nature solutions utilise services provided by the natural system and/or provide new opportunities to that system. As a consequence, such solutions are sensitive to the status of, and interact with the surrounding system. A thorough understanding of the ambient natural system is therefore necessary to meet the required specifications and to realise the potential interactions with that system. In order to be adopted beyond the pilot scale, the potential impact of multiple BwN solutions on the natural and societal systems of a region need to be established. This requires a ‘reality check’ of the effectiveness of multiple, regional-scale applications in terms of social and environmental costs and benefits. Reality checking will help establish the upscaling potential of a certain BwN measure when addressing a larger-scale issue. Conversely, it might reveal to what extent specific smaller-scale measures are suitable in light of larger regional-scale issues. This paper presents a stepwise method to approach a reality check on BwN solutions, based on the Frame of Reference method described in a companion paper (de Vries et al., 2020), and illustrates its use by two example cases. The examples show that a successful pilot project is not always a guarantee of wider applicability and that a broader application may involve dilemmas concerning environment, policy and legislation

    Applicability of the “Frame of Reference” approach for environmental monitoring of offshore renewable energy projects

    This paper assesses the applicability of the Frame of Reference (FoR) approach for the environmental monitoring of large-scale offshore Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) projects. The focus is on projects harvesting energy from winds, waves and currents. Environmental concerns induced by MRE projects are reported based on a classification scheme identifying stressors, receptors, effects and impacts. Although the potential effects of stressors on most receptors are identified, there are large knowledge gaps regarding the corresponding (positive and negative) impacts. In that context, the development of offshore MRE requires the implementation of fit-for-purpose monitoring activities aimed at environmental protection and knowledge development. Taking European legislation as an example, it is suggested to adopt standardized monitoring protocols for the enhanced usage and utility of environmental indicators. Towards this objective, the use of the FoR approach is advocated since it provides guidance for the definition and use of coherent set of environmental state indicators. After a description of this framework, various examples of applications are provided considering a virtual MRE project located in European waters. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations are provided for the successful implementation of the FoR approach and for future studies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Identification of emulsifier potato peptides by bioinformatics: application to omega-3 delivery emulsions and release from potato industry side streams

We also acknowledge K.M.C. amba (Brande, Denmark) and A.K.V. amba (Langholt, Denmark) for providing the potato samples used in this study.In this work, we developed a novel approach combining bioinformatics, testing of functionality and bottom-up proteomics to obtain peptide emulsifiers from potato side-streams. This is a significant advancement in the process to obtain emulsifier peptides and it is applicable to any type of protein. Our results indicated that structure at the interface is the major determining factor of the emulsifying activity of peptide emulsifiers. Fish oil-in-water emulsions with high physical stability were stabilized with peptides to be predicted to have facial amphiphilicity: (i) peptides with predominantly α-helix conformation at the interface and having 18–29 amino acids, and (ii) peptides with predominantly β-strand conformation at the interface and having 13–15 amino acids. In addition, high physically stable emulsions were obtained with peptides that were predicted to have axial hydrophobic/hydrophilic regions. Peptides containing the sequence FCLKVGV showed high in vitro antioxidant activity and led to emulsions with high oxidative stability. Peptide-level proteomics data and sequence analysis revealed the feasibility to obtain the potent emulsifier peptides found in this study (e.g. γ-1) by trypsin-based hydrolysis of different side streams in the potato industry.Innovation Fund Denmark 7045-00021

    This dataset contains information on vessel movements in the North Sea and Dutch Inland Waterways for the months January, April, July, and October in 2019. It provides a heatmap representation of vessel traffic density during these specific months, which can be useful for various maritime and environmental analyses. 1. File Formats The dataset is provided in the following file formats: NetCDF : The primary data files are available in netcdf format. For each grid cell the variables sog (Speed Over Ground) and count (Number of AIS messages) are available GeoTIFF (Georeferenced Tagged Image File Format): Heatmap images are provided in GeoTIFF format, suitable for geographic visualization. The dataset is split into tiles. Each tile conforms to the OSM tiling naming scheme. 2. Variables The dataset includes the following key variables: Speed Over Ground (SOG): The average vessel's speed over the ground for all the messages. Count: The number of AIS messages received in this location 3. Data Collection Method The AIS data used in this dataset was collected from AIS transponders on vessels operating in the North Sea and Dutch Inland Waterways. These transponders transmit information such as vessel position, speed, and identification. The dataset aggregates this information to create heatmap images for analysis. We did this on all the messages. Some ships emit more messages than others. Ships emit messages at higher frequency when sailing than when stationary. 4. Source of Original Data The original AIS data used to create this dataset was sourced from the AIS archive from Rijkswaterstaat. This dataset was analysed for the purpose of a storymap

    Five golden principles to advance marine reef restoration by linking science and industry

    Marine reef ecosystems have degraded massively worldwide, and restoration efforts have as yet not managed to realize the scale required to reverse continued degradation. To achieve effective scales, scientific insights in restoration methods should be paired with industry-based approaches used for infrastructural development. We illustrate by five principles how long-standing experience of marine contractors with executing large-scale projects, can support reef restoration: i) utilizing industrial techniques to achieve positive impact at scale, ii) landscaping infrastructure to optimize habitat for targeted species, iii) inducing life to overcome connectivity bottle-necks and steer community composition, iv) designing nature development efforts to be self-sustainable, and v) ensuring continuity beyond project boundaries by early stakeholder engagement. Consciously connecting scientific knowledge to industry-based activities increases the likelihood that marine infrastructure development and ecosystem rehabilitation can be aligned. We plead that synergizing practices by science and industry is needed to upscale restoration efforts and truly improve marine reef ecosystems
